Choosing rope material is mostly about personal preference. It’s about what looks best to your eye and fits your boat’s personality. That said, some materials offer added durability and a stronger connection to traditional craftsmanship.
Manila – A Classic That LastsManila rope is the top performer when it comes to resisting wind, water, and time. It’s been used for centuries in maritime settings and is easily recognized by its warm, reddish-brown tone. All our manila fenders are crafted with 26 mm hand-laid rope, and we offer two distinct variants:
- Recycled Manila This rope has already lived a life on the ropewalk before being reborn as a fender. It gives a rich, weathered look with beautiful color variation and patina – especially fitting for vintage wooden boats. It feels like the fender and boat have aged together. As a bonus, it also comes at a lower price point.

- New Manila This is the highest quality manila rope you can get – hand-laid, strong, and ready to face the elements. Even fresh from the ropewalk, it carries tradition in every twist. It’s a bit more expensive than the recycled version, but unmatched in feel and heritage.

Hemp – Naturally Subtle
Hemp rope has a soft beige-brown tone and tightens slightly when wet, giving the fender a snug and sturdy look. It’s a classic choice for those who appreciate natural fibers and subtle color.

Hempex (Polyhemp) – Durable and Deceptively Natural
If you want a fender that can handle anything, Hempex is your friend. This synthetic material mimics the look of natural rope but is more resistant to water, UV, and wear. Our Hempex is also 26 mm hand-laid rope from our local ropewalk. It’s the softest to the touch and comes in a light beige-white color – perfect if you want a clean, low-maintenance look that still feels traditional.
